The possibilities for visual comedy with this idea are seemingly endless, but the movie chooses instead to plug the characters into a dumb plot about.

Gene Wilder plays Dave, the deaf owner of a newsstand, who hires Wally (Pryor), a blind gambler, to work for him. Wally's bookie comes to the newsstand and is shot by a mysterious woman, Eve (Joan Severance), but, before dying, he drops a priceless coin into Dave's cigar box till.
